In 2009 the housing association pledged to support WaterAid as its chosen charity for three years. The organisation is on track to meet its fundraising target of £25,000 by the time its official support ends on 31 March.

Ronnie Clawson, Director of Corporate Services said: “We are overwhelmed by the generosity of our colleagues, especially since a lot of this money was raised during the economic downturn and alongside regular fundraising for other charities.

“There have been lots of great fundraising events going on across Riverside and staff have really pushed the boat out for this worthy cause. From coffee, cake and even curry mornings, to golf days, raffles, bike rides, midnight walks, bog snorkelling and mountain climbing. We also launched a One Hour’s Pay Campaign where staff could donate an hour’s pay to WaterAid directly from their salary.”

WaterAid works in some of the world’s poorest countries, helping to provide one of the basic human needs –safe water.

Ronnie added: “We chose WaterAid because safe water is one of the most basic human needs and something which many of us take for granted. 884 million people across the world do not have access to clean water and many of them have to travel long distances for water which is contaminated or even shared with animals.

“In today’s world no one should have to use dirty water and even the smallest of donations can help WaterAid transform the lives of people around the world.”

The £24,000 raised so far is enough to: enable 1,600 people to access clean water, improved sanitation and hygiene education; pay for six schools to have a rainwater harvesting system; buy 480 hand pumps; or pay for 40 rainwater harvesting tanks.

Other charities Riverside staff have supported over the last three years include: Cancer Research UK, Breast Cancer Care, Zoe’s Place, Meningitis Research, Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation, North West Air Ambulance, Lennox Children’s Cancer Fund and Barnardo’s.
