Understanding apprenticeships : Frequently asked questions
What is an apprenticeship?
An apprenticeship is where you are employed and undertaking a development qualification. You may start your career journey through undertaking an entry level apprenticeship or you may undertake an apprenticeship qualification if you are already employed. Either option will allow you to earn and learn at the same time. By the end of your apprenticeship, you’ll hopefully have gained the skills and knowledge needed to either succeed in your chosen career or progress onto the next apprenticeship level.
What will I earn as an apprentice?
Earning and learning at the same time is one of the great advantages of undertaking an apprenticeship. You will start earning from day one, the minimum wage for an apprentice from April 2018 is £3.70 but employers will often offer more depending on the role and level of the apprenticeship.
If you decide to complete a higher or degree apprenticeship, you will not need to pay any tuition fees and you will be earning whilst completing your studies resulting in no student loans or debt.
How do I get involved? What do I need?
You could have just left school, college or university. You might already have a few years’ work experience under your belt. Either way, you’ll need to:
- be aware of your options. There are many apprenticeship vacancies and qualifications available to you so knowing what type of career you wish pursue will help you choose your route
- visit https://www.getingofar.gov.uk/ for more information on apprenticeships or to search for local vacancies
- attend employer recruitment fairs. Many employers attend recruitment fairs looking for the best talent, this is also your opportunity to research and learn more about their business and decide whether they are right for you.
What do the different levels mean in comparison to GCSEs, A-Levels and degrees?
The Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) is a credit transfer system which means that apprenticeship qualifications match traditional academic qualifications. For example, a Level 2 apprenticeship equates to GCSE, a Level 3 apprenticeship relates to A-Level and a Level 7 apprenticeship is the same level as a Master’s Degree.
What happens when I complete my apprenticeship?
You can progress onto the next level and continue to become a specialist, or you could decide to complete another apprenticeship in a different field or even develop to become a leader in your specialism.
