Marie House is a safe, confidential refuge for women and children who are fleeing domestic abuse. Based in Wakefield, the service is provided by Riverside and offers a supportive, welcoming place to rebuild confidence and plan for a safer future.
Marie House accepts women aged 16 and over, along with their children, from anywhere in the UK if they are fleeing domestic abuse. Referrals must come through a professional agency such as the police, a GP, or social services. You will also need to have access to benefits.
Support is tailored to each person. You will work closely with staff to build daily living skills, improve safety, and access legal and practical help. If you and your family resettle in the Wakefield area, Riverside will continue to support you through the Wakefield Floating Support service to help make the transition smoother.
Once you are ready to move on, you can continue to receive Floating Support. This includes a dedicated Support Plan and more intensive help with housing, tenancy issues and ongoing support around domestic abuse. Riverside also works with other agencies if additional specialist services are needed.
Getting the most out of the service
The service focuses on helping you rebuild self-esteem and confidence. You can take part in courses such as the Freedom Programme, which helps you understand the signs and effects of domestic abuse, plan for safety, and set positive goals for the future.
