What you will find at the accommodation

How the service works

Young Families & Teen Parents support

  • The service supports young families, single mums and dads, couples, and teen parents.
  • Referrals are accepted for people aged 16–25.
  • The aim is to help parents build strong relationships with their children and gain the skills to live independently.

Floating Support (Move-on support)

  • When families leave the accommodation, they receive Floating Support for up to two years.
  • A dedicated Floating Support Worker helps with:
    • Keeping appointments
    • Dealing with letters and phone calls
    • Managing daily routines
    • Maintaining the home and paying rent
  • Regular welfare check-ins are part of the service, with extra support offered when needed.

The aims of the service

  • Improve the life chances of young parents and strengthen parent–child relationships.
  • Build independent living skills and the ability to manage and keep a tenancy.
  • Promote positive change, progression, health, and wellbeing.

Referrals

The service is for people who live in the Wakefield area or have a local connection (for example, family in Wakefield). Referrals can be made by any relevant agency.

All referrals go through Wakefield Council’s Housing Needs Service.

  • The Housing Needs Service processes referrals within three days.
  • Referrals are then sent to the Pathway Co‑ordinator.
  • The Young Families Service contacts the referrer and applicant within three days to talk through needs and likely start times.

How this service is different

This service is more than just housing. It offers round‑the‑clock support, practical help, and long‑term floating support so young families gain the skills, confidence, and stability they need to move on and successfully sustain their own home.
