Cardboard sumo making, edible self-portraits, a graffiti workshop and a rap battle are just some of the activities Orchard Park residents can enjoy this week.
Housing association Riverside has teamed up with Hull’s Creative People and Places programme Roots and Wings to host a programme of performance and debate at St Michael’s Youth Hall from Thursday 19 November.
Running through to Sunday, the programme will allow residents to have their say on how art will complement Harrison Park, one of three extra care schemes being built on behalf of Hull City Council by Riverside, in partnership with Wates Living Space.
As part of the £80 million developments, £300,000 has been set aside for public art across the three sites. An additional £50,000 has been allocated for Orchard Park.
The consultation exercise, presented by The Oasis Social Club, is an opportunity to gather residents’ thoughts on public art and how the funding should be used.
Riverside’s Community Engagement Project Manager Sian Martin-Baez said: “As an organisation which has delivered care and support services in Hull for over 25 years, we recognise the benefits of public art on health and well-being. This is why art will play a big part in our extra care schemes.”
Councillor John Black, portfolio holder for council infrastructure with responsibility for housing, added: “We are looking forward to hearing what the people of Orchard Park think of art and how they want to see it develop in their neighbourhood. In addition to being an opportunity to have their say on public art, the event promises to be fun for all the family with lots of interactive workshops to get involved in.”
Sarah Taylor, Roots and Wings’ Project Manager for Audiences, said: “The event at Orchard Park is a part of a series of consultations to find out what residents want to see from the £3m we were awarded from Arts Council England for public art in Hull as part of their Creative People and Places Fund. Riverside wanted to consult the same residents on their funding so it is a great opportunity to work in partnership.”
