How to look for jobs in your local area

We know it can be tricky trying to find a job, let alone one close to home. But with our help, it might be easier to get the job of your dreams. Here’s some handy tips to think about before you start.

Looking for work

  1. Use job search websites that focus on local jobs in your area

The most important thing to remember is to make sure you are doing the right search. There are certain job sites that allow you to add in the location of where you would like the job to be and how far you would be willing to travel (2 miles, 5 miles and so on). We also suggest finding out all the companies in and around your area. Make a list and start searching on their websites for the career section. Many jobs are not advertised externally and only advertise jobs on their own website. This will help you tap into that hidden job market.

  1. Make the job come to you

There are a number of job sites that allow you to upload your CV and keep it on their database. It is one of the quickest ways of searching for a job. You can do the same with recruitment agencies. All you have to do is upload your CV or hand one in to your local recruitment agency and wait for them to call you with jobs that match what you’re looking for.

  1. Check your local newspaper

You might think all job-hunting is done online these days, but there’s still a lot to be found offline. Most local newspapers have a recruitment section on a certain day of the week so it’s a good idea to find out when it is, and check it. Usually, they do it on the same day every week. Not only will you see what jobs are available right now but you’ll also get a better idea of the types of industries that thrive in your area. Sometimes the paper tells you about new companies and businesses coming soon to your town who will generally need new staff.

  1. Be direct

Once you know the types of industries and companies in your local area or ones that might be coming soon, you can be more  contact them before they even advertise to see if there are any jobs available. Don’t worry, these companies are used to being asked and it saves them time and money on advertising the job in the first place. You might receive a rejection or you may not even hear back but it’s worth a try. You never know, if you have the right skills and there is a job available then you could be invited in for a meeting.
