Supporting people to get out in an emergency

Print

It’s important that you and the emergency services are prepared and have the right information to deal with incidents effectively. This includes knowing if you or anyone you live with would need support to get out quickly in an emergency, such as a fire.

There are a number of reasons why that might be – for example because someone has a disability, or perhaps they can’t use the stairs easily, or hear alarms.

Please let us know. Depending on what you tell us, our dedicated team may talk to you about your needs and complete an assessment called a person-centred fire risk assessment (PCFRA).

The team will work together with the customer to create what’s known as an R-PEEP which stands for ‘residential personal emergency evacuation plan’. This is a plan which is tailored to the person’s individual circumstances and takes into account any additional support needs they might have if they need to get out in an emergency.

No, the government has introduced R-PEEPs for residents living in all high-rise buildings and medium-rise buildings (those between 11 and 18 metres) that have a simultaneous evacuation strategy in place.

R-PEEPs can be permanent or temporary, depending on each individual customer’s circumstances.

Permanent R-PEEPs are for customers who have a permanent disability or vulnerability that would impact their ability to get out.

Temporary R-PEEPs are aimed at customers whose ability to get out in an emergency is for a time-limited period only – for example someone who’s had an injury or accident which means they can’t move about easily or quickly. In these instances, the R-PEEP is reviewed regularly and will end when the customer’s ability to get out is no longer affected.

We’ll talk to you about this when you contact us as everyone’s circumstances are unique and it depends on what kind of support is needed.

If you’re happy for us to share the information you provide with the emergency services, we’ll store it securely in a box that can only we or they can access. You might hear this referred to as a secure information box (SIB) or a premises information box (PIB) – essentially, they’re the same thing. You can find out more about PIBs on the National Fire Chief Council website.
