It’s ace being an Ally

Liverpool Pride takes place this weekend and I can’t wait!

As a Friend of Spectrum (Spectrum is Riverside’s LBGT staff group) I will be joining some of my colleagues to take part in what will be my first Pride march.

Over the years I have stood and watched loads of Pride marches from the side lines both in the UK and even in Europe and had an absolute blast – enjoying the party atmosphere and the good feeling that surrounds these events. This is the first time I will be marching myself.  It is, in fact, the first time I have marched for anything.

I had the opportunity to march last year but passed it up – I felt too self-conscious to put myself out there. This year I feel differently.

With all the negativity around the world being promoted by the likes of Donald Trump and right wing politicians in the UK and Europe, it feels like it is more important than ever to stand up for and shout about those groups of people who often face discrimination and in worst case scenarios, are victims of hate crime or worse.

I’m really excited to be joining the march on Saturday and can’t wait for the fun, music and amazing people who will be there this weekend to share the message of understanding, tolerance, diversity and inclusivity.
