This National Apprenticeship Week, we’re celebrating the passion, dedication and talent of our apprentices who are helping shape the future of housing at Riverside. As housing qualifications become increasingly important in our sector, we’re committed to investing in our people and supporting them to grow in confidence, expand their skills and take the next step in their careers.
Over the last year, we have seen 60 colleagues complete an apprenticeship, with an additional 186 colleagues currently studying and building their future.
We wanted to shine a spotlight on some of our apprentices who have shared their experiences, journeys and advice for others thinking about following the same path.
“You learn so much more by doing.” – Juan, Housing Officer Apprentice
Juan discovered his apprenticeship through job portals and was drawn to the hands-on nature of the role. His days are spent solving cases, supporting tenants and visiting homes – experiences he says have changed the way he understands the industry.
“My perspective has changed from strictly following guidelines to understanding the people behind them. That change helps me provide better service.”
He says that one of his favourite moments was delivering Christmas gifts to tenants and experiencing the impact of small acts of kindness.
“I wanted something hands‑on where I could work and learn at the same time.” – Shania, Housing Apprentice
For Shania, choosing an apprenticeship was all about finding the right balance between practical experience and studying. She thrives in environments where she can apply what she’s learning straight away, making the apprenticeship route the perfect fit for her.
A typical day can include anything from catching up on cases and answering emails to heading out on‑site for viewings – something she particularly enjoys because it allows her to connect directly with customers and see the real impact of her work.
Her confidence has grown significantly too; stepping into a completely new field and learning to ask questions without hesitation. She also highlights how joining a supportive and welcoming team has been one of the most rewarding parts of her journey.
“Do it – and don’t look back.” – Shamarni, Housing Officer Apprentice
Sharmarni said that apprenticeships felt like a more reliable, real‑world alternative to university – a chance to learn, earn and build a career at the same time.
“I thought everything would be black and white, but there’s so much variation in what we deal with. I’m learning every day.”
He says that no two days are ever the same. Whether its study days spent researching projects or workdays handling cases and emails, he has discovered just how varied the world of housing can be.
His apprenticeship experience has also shaped his future ambitions, giving him a clearer sense of direction and inspiring him to pursue a long‑term career in the property sector.
Apprenticeships build skills, confidence and careers
Across their journeys, our apprentices highlighted similar themes of growing in confidence, developing technical and personal skills, whilst building solid foundations for a future career in housing.
