Thought-provoking play about gang violence performed in Croydon

Thought-provoking play Terriers was devised to tackle gang violence. Delivered by the Royal Court Liverpool Trust and Fairfield Halls in Croydon, the project was originally commissioned by Merseyside Police. The play aims to get young people thinking about the consequences of their actions and their attitude towards gang behaviour.

Community engagement officer Wendy Mason was impressed: “What a play! Aimed at young people, it tackles the consequences of being in a gang. The performance had the audience gripped from the off. It felt very real and was thought provoking; touching on topics including guns, murder, bullying and sexual exploitation of girls. Some of our Lambeth residents got to meet the cast after the show too.”

The play took place in the Community Performance Studio at Fairfield Halls, thanks to sponsorship from Riverside’s Community Chest Fund and other sponsors including Arts Council England. The play toured schools and colleges in South London for two weeks before heading back up north to Manchester and Liverpool where the play originated.
