There was a great turn out for a community litter pick on the Parish Fields in Longtown when 25 children and local community leaders joined forces to improve their environment.
Everyone was then able to enjoy the space they had tidied up with free activities including a penalty shootout, BMX biking and an arts & crafts session. The Fire Service and Police brought along vehicles for everyone to have a look at too.
Stella Eggleston, Neighbourhood Planner for Riverside said; “Riverside carried out a community consultation with residents in Longtown, lack of activities for young people along with fly tipping and litter were raised as the issues that most concerned people. This event was an ideal way to tackle both these issues and was organised by a partnership group which includes Barnardos, parish, county and city councillors, youth workers, police and the library. It is amazing what we can achieve together.”
Riverside’s grounds maintenance contractor, ISS Facility Services Landscaping (ISS), carried out a one off cut to the BMX track to make it more attractive for young people to use and BikeSeven were on hand on the day to give advice on bike maintenance.
Val Tarbitt, County Councillor said “The Parish Playing Fields came alive on Thursday. Loads of fun, colour and excitement and the litter pick ensured that everywhere looked good!”
