Riverside is recruiting volunteers for a befriending scheme in Halton and is holding an event for people to find out more.
The befriending recruitment event is on Monday 18 April, 10-12, at Halton Lea Library Job Club. Halton residents are invited to find out what they can do to combat loneliness for the elderly.
The housing association has already set up befriending schemes in Southport, Merseyside and Sefton. And it is now looking for people in Halton who are keen to visit the over 55s, to help improve health and wellbeing, and encourage independent living in older age.
Research suggests that loneliness is as harmful as smoking, can raise blood pressure and increase the risk of developing dementia and depression.
“Befriending is all about companionship,” said Petra McCauley, Riverside’s older person’s volunteering officer. “Volunteers will not be required to carry out caring responsibilities, but will provide home visits to develop friendships, initially for a six week period, but this can be extended following a review. The scheme benefits both volunteers and those taking up the befriending service.”
Riverside is matching volunteers with older tenants who are living independently, as well as those in its Retirement Living schemes, based on shared interests or hobbies. Training is provided with roles and boundaries clearly defined.
The befriending scheme also acts as a gateway to Riverside support, such as affordable warmth and money advice, as well as other services. It is funded through the Riverside Foundation, the housing association’s fundraising charity.
