Supporting our communities with the cost-of-living

Case Study: Well Fed Riverside

In response to the cost-of-living crisis the Community Planning and Resilience Team have been working to develop an umbrella of projects called ‘Well Fed Riverside’ with food insecurity charity “Can Cook”- a comprehensive approach that supports customers to retain their dignity while receiving support to tackle food insecurity.  It combines an educational approach to cooking with accessibility to affordable food.

The service provides meal boxes containing all the necessary ingredients to cook five nutritional meals per week, as well as staple items like bread and milk. Each meal box includes detailed, simple recipe cards that support customers to cook healthy meals in the comfort of their own home. The funding allowed us to provide this service for four weeks, after which customers are offered the option to continue with the service at a reduced cost for a further eight weeks.

We piloted this programme across North Liverpool, supporting 50 households in total.

Lisa from North Liverpool said: “The meals are so easy to make, even if you have a big family to cook for.  This has made such a big difference to me and my children, my children don’t currently live with me so I receive no support financially to support them when they stay with me and I find it’s a struggle to put food on the table.  Being able to cook lovely meals from scratch for my children when they stay with me is a huge help. Thank you so much”.
