Men and Sheds Community Workshop

Riverside’s Jeff Allen and local Councillor Phil Burke officially opened a community workshop at the Demesne Community Centre in Langley recently which has received £1,000 of funding from Riverside.

Demesne Community Centre was set up in the early 1980’s and provides a meeting place where local people can meet and share information on issues that affect their lives and the environment they live in.

Demesne Community WorkshopThey hold a varied programme which includes activities for pre-school, after school, luncheon groups, social groups, coffee mornings and T job clubs, working with a variety of local people.

Over the past few months, volunteers Stephen and Tony from the workshop have been mentoring local people as well as the young people from Status 4 All in making garden ornaments and garden planters, where possible using reclaimed or recycled wood.  Together they have produced some amazing items which have now gone on sale with all proceeds being put towards sustaining the project in the future.

Jeff Allen from Riverside said: ““This is one of many excellent initiatives that take place at Demesne Community Centre and something that Riverside are delighted to support”

The Community workshop has been open for the last 6 months and is for local people who are feeling socially isolated or who just needed some support. The project is open every day from 9 am until late.

The project aims to bring people together to improve their lifestyles and ensure that they receive information and can make choices, not only to improve their physical health but their mental health as well.

Christine from Demesne Community Association said “We are grateful to Riverside for their support in this project.  The workshop is a place where local people can learn new skills, making or mending in wood, and make garden planters, bird boxes, garden benches and making garden ornaments or if they want the can just come for a chat and a brew.”
